I believe that human emotion is one of the most powerful forces. It can compel someone to commit the most heroic acts of bravery against all odds, and on the opposite end of the scale, it can motivate a person to commit the most heinous acts. At all echelons of society, no one is exempt from the unyielding power of their emotions. The Buchanan Bastard, written by Dedra L. Stevenson, is a crime novel that demonstrates this issue at its core.

The Buchanan Bastard is set against the intriguing backdrop of New Orleans during the 1970s. Laura Beauford and Brian Buchanan seemed like the perfect couple, very much in love and enjoying martial bliss. However, one catastrophic night, and their lives are no longer the same. Laura is in desperate need of help, so she reaches out to her father, Larry, a former military man and a criminal lawyer. They work together to unravel the mystery surrounding what has happened. The further they go, the deeper the rabbit hole gets. They find themselves hunted by those with links to the Russian mafia, running for their lives, with very few people to turn to for help.

I appreciated how beautifully crafted the plot was; everything came together seamlessly. The storyline was fast-paced and flowed easily. It held my attention from the beginning to the end. I liked how themes such as forgiveness and the importance of love and family were included in the book amidst all the action and intrigue.

I did not find anything negative about the book. I also liked that it was so well edited; this just enhanced my reading experience. This book had it all: fast-paced action, mystery, intrigue, and interesting characters. I always enjoy reading a good crime-action novel, and this one was great. I easily gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading crime, action, thrillers, and mystery novels.
