Review of Raw Deal
Two young men, Joe Brennan and Tony, were drafted into the United States Army from the National Guard and sent to Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. Unfortunately, one night while on duty, they both got drunk, and Joe accidentally entered a room where the vaccine produced by Vectelon Corporation was stored. He was subsequently taken out of the room by an MP who was on guard, but unfortunately, both he and the MP got infected and died. The military informed Joe’s family that he died in an accident while on duty and that the United States Army was proud of him. Joe's mother, Regina Brennan, was devastated, and his sister Sandi, who was in her second year of law school and had hoped to emulate her brother and be the second lawyer in the family, was equally devastated.
At Joe's funeral, the mayor, Tom Creighton, came with a family friend, Len Krause, a seasoned and established lawyer who had promised Joe he would work in his law firm, Krause and Nielson. Len and his partner, Dave, realizing that Sandi was also in law school, extended the job offer to her. Because she needed the money to complete her schooling and help her parents, Ray and Regina Brennan, she accepted the offer. She resumed her job at the law firm, and all was going well until Joe's best friend in the army, Tony, showed up to give Sandi the book Joe gave him to read before he died. While conversing, Sandi wanted to know how her brother died in the accident, but Tony was surprised because it was not an accident. The story becomes interesting when Len's friend, Mark Ricklin, a Ph.D. holder in microbiology, is laid off from his work at Vectelon by his boss, Ken Daly. To cover up and save Vectelon from scandal, Ken decided to implicate Mark in a drug case by sending him to prison. Mark contacted Len, and events began to take a dangerous turn. This Mark's brutal ordeal would be an avenue for Sandi to take matters into his own hands in unraveling the secrets of his brother's death, as he would team up with other connected characters who are directly striving to seek justice for Mark Ricklin. Would the secret of Vectelon Corporation be exposed without splitting much blood?
“Raw Deal: A Coverup Turns Deadly” by Lee Fishman is a gripping thriller that delves into the dark world of corporate and government malfeasance. It shows the manipulations and cover-ups by some selfish, highly-placed individuals in corporate organizations and the American government regarding a weaponized anthrax vaccine that led to the deaths of U.S. soldiers and staff of the company Vectelon that produces it.
This novel has an intricate storyline; it weaves together the lives of soldiers, lawyers, and corporate executives, keeping the reader engaged. The unfolding mystery around Vectelon's weaponized anthrax vaccine and the subsequent deaths adds a layer of suspense, heart-pounding reading quality, and intrigue. The twists and turns, especially with the deaths of some seemingly key characters, keep the reader on edge.
I especially love that Sandi Brennan's character is compelling and relatable. Her transformation from a grieving sister to a determined investigator showcases her resilience and tenacity. Her pursuit of the truth, despite the dangers, highlights her bravery and dedication to justice, making her an inspiring protagonist who drives the plot and gives readers a sense of engagement and immersion in the story.
I don't dislike anything in this interesting and perfectly depicted storyline. The detailed depiction of legal strategies and investigative procedures lends authenticity to the story. For example, Sandi's legal acumen and the investigative efforts of Garret Price provide a realistic portrayal of how such cases might unfold in real life. Also, the book has been perfectly edited, as I found no grammar errors in it.
Therefore, I'll give this book a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars. If you appreciate complex plots with strong, determined protagonists and enjoy stories that critique real-world issues through compelling fiction, this novel will captivate you.
