Review of A Walk Through the Grapes
This is an emotionally charged story about Jace Grazer as he returns home to his beloved town of Willow Creek. Jace's return is welcome, thoughtful, and replete with nostalgia and the tenderness of a broken heart. Jace's relationship with his family, including the confrontation with Oliver, is one of intense loyalty, love, and the hurt of something not said. A tempestuous relationship is thus displayed between Jace and Oliver, their spats ranging from violent fights where the air would vibrate with spoken words. All this melodrama leads back to a final confrontation in the heart of the vineyard, where all these physical and emotional landscapes collide. Whether these two will reunite amidst their intriguing family dynamics or pull each other apart is something to look out for in this book.
This book is indeed an exquisite piece of work that shows the linkages of family. I love the manner in which characters love and are loyal to one another, no matter what kind of conflicts they have, beneath all that conflicting nature. Actually, the Grazer family's journey demonstrates that, whatever the emergency-facing situation, family connections can be resolute and supportive. For example, even though Jace and Oliver have too much of a bad vibe between them because of issues back in the past, ultimately, beneath all the loose, quarrelsome, worldly shells, there is a strong bond that shines through in each family. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
Teens are moved by the love existing between their parents. I think that is a very sturdy foundation. So, it is something that I like very much about the history. This is one key reason that I like the way that this novel really brings out all those very small day-to-day scenes of family life. I was surprised that everybody sat down to eat together regularly. Even in these little moments, I experience the presence of family, even when times are tough. The novel paints a powerful picture, showing that, though there is conflict in nature and, above all, a family factor, everything sticks together because of love and loyalty.
It's a perfectly paced novel. It never lets you catch your stride, and David Jackson instinctively knows where to push things forward and where to let you catch a breath or two. For a start-to-finish, white-knuckle ride, there's nothing not to dislike about this book. A Walk Through the Grapes ends in such a satisfying, beautiful way that you are left with the biggest smile on your face. The real hook is that the story makes you consider your life and your most important relationships.
It is a strong 5 out of 5 star book. It was an emotional ride well crafted. Family ties and personal development are at the core of this story. The characters are so well fleshed out, and their challenges seem so believable. This is merely the book that is flowing perfectly with just the right amount of turmoil vs. respite to keep going. It earns 5 stars for its extremely satisfying ending. I would very highly recommend this novel to those readers who truly love stories about multi-generational family life and coming home; they are actual treasures that will leave your heart full.
