The Man Who Fell in Love With His Wife by Patrick Oster is a romantic spy novel where the main male character begins to investigate what or who his wife is after her tragic death. Duncan MacEwen, a retired firefighter into photography, suddenly lost his wife in a fiery road accident while he was outside the country. He returns to discover that his wife was dead, and the book begins one week after the death of his wife with the discovery of some of his wife's belongings hidden in a trunk in the attic, which makes him begin to reassess and ask questions about who his wife truly was. Seeing phony passports with his wife's picture on them, along with stacks of cash, ammunition for a heavy-duty weapon, and a 9-mm Sig Sauer, among other things, in a secret compartment in his wife's trunk, suddenly turns Duncan from just a grieving widow who is sad over the death of his wife to an inquisitive widow who is desperate for the truth about his wife. His first and major thought is not whether his wife was cheating, though it was there in the background, but whether his wife was a CIA agent, a Russian sleeper agent, or even a secret arms merchant.

This is an intriguing novel. For Duncan, the death of his wife made him begin to ask questions about his wife, and he discovered things about her childhood days that he had previously not known before. He could have moved on with his life and gotten married to another woman, as his father-in-law advised him, but he didn't.

My favorite character in the book is, of course, Duncan MacEwen. His character was the driving force behind why I find this book so intriguing. He played the role of a dedicated, loving, inquisitive, and determined husband so perfectly that I couldn't help but fall in love with this character. Despite what others may have done and said to dissuade him from pursuing the truth about who his wife was, he still continued, even at the risk of bringing danger upon himself. Another thing I liked about this character was the way he developed as the story progressed in the book. He began to learn new things relating to spycraft, which also made the book so much fun.

I find nothing to dislike about the book. The author tells the story well in an orderly fashion, from when he discovers the secret cache until the final chapter. Each day is accounted for, and all his activities towards finding the truth are detailed. I commend the author for such an exceptional novel. The book is well-structured and exceptionally well edited.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I see no reason not to give this book the perfect rating it deserves. The mystery, spycraft, and intrigue all make this book worth the time to read. I recommend this book to lovers of spy and mystery novels.

The Man Who Fell in Love with His Wife by Patrick Oster sounds like a gripping and emotional novel. The protagonist's struggle to come to terms with his wife's death and his subsequent investigation into her life is a compelling premise for a spy novel. I am eager to read this book and discover the truth behind the mysterious life of Duncan's wife.

Poor Duncan lost his wife just to discover that maybe she was never the person he thought or at the very least she hid many secrets from him. I'm curious to know what he'll discover. Thank you for your great review!
