Twisted But True is a book of true crime stories experienced and written by Darren Burch. Darren shares stories of over 30 years as a cop with twisted humor and madness. After a horrible incident forced him to develop a passion for saving lives at his teenage age, Darren followed through with his dreams by attending military training, applying for a job at the CIA, then applying to several police departments back home before landing a job with the Phoenix Police Department, where he spent his childhood. Darren encounters many strange, daring, gruesome, and unheard-of encounters while practicing as a cop that I’m sure would captivate your mind. If you’re curious to know the details of the life of a cop, grab a copy of this book to find out.

Darren tells his story with dark humor, not intending to write off or take the experiences of the victim lightly but to protect his mental health and enable him to continue his journey as a cop, as most of his encounters were not too pleasant. The detailing and storytelling of the events that occurred during his on-duty and off-duty patrols are quite commendable. The author’s humor, especially in “It Was Very Professional,” was something I really enjoyed.

While there wasn’t a lot to dislike about this book, the warnings at the beginning of the book are clear enough to discourage readers who may not be too comfortable with the graphic scenes and sensitive cases that were detailed in the book. There were a few grammatical errors in the book that may not detract readers or reduce their reading experience. Hence, this book was professionally edited.

I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for the reasons stated above. Apart from its entertaining qualities, this book also creates awareness of safety protocols and steps for individuals facing similar situations illustrated in the book. This book also shows the hard work and selfless service cops put into their duty to serve their nation, so they should be honored and respected.

Lovers of true crime books will find this book very rich to read. I will also recommend it to readers who are of mature age and have the mental and emotional capacity to read some of the stories written by Burch without being affected in any way. This book is also ideal for law enforcement personnel and readers who love to read memoirs.

The book is somewhat painful, containing graphic scenes and sensitive cases, so it is recommended for readers who have the ability to confront such topics without negative impact.

True crime stories can be stranger and grittier than any fiction. Reading them might not be easy due to the graphic bits but knowing that they really happened offers a windows into certain dark sides of humanity. Thank you for your great review!
