Imagine spending two years away from your hometown and your family, staying thousands of miles away from them, and then coming back to see a string of terrible events unfold in front of you. All you can think is, why did I come back? A Walk Through the Grapes by David Jackson tells an enigmatic tale of a man named Jace, who abandoned everything, including his family, love, and everything else—in order to pursue his goals. The story's title is subtle and appropriately chosen because the grapevine yard owned by Jace's parents, Robert and Marie, centers the entire storyline.

David’s imagination and vivid description of the story elements is so fascinating that it lets the reader drive into their own world of imagination. The story plot is well-framed and the narrative style is exceptional in nature. With such a great narrative and awesome storyline, you will just want to read the book as soon as you can.

Jace, the main character of this story, has a brother named Dane and two sisters. Numerous topics are covered in the narrative, including romanticism, a love triangle, sibling rivalry, family drama, suspense, and mystery. Premising the story with Jace’s return to his home, the author clearly tries to show Jace’s emotions and nostalgia as he is heading to his family and going to face the love he left behind. Ally is Jace’s girlfriend, who endured the pain of separation, as Jace chose his dreams over her. Returning back, it proved to be a challenge to face Ally. Meanwhile McKenzie, Ally’s younger sister, tries her chance to win Jace’s heart. The author has wonderfully created a love triangle with Jace, Ally and McKenzie. Moreover, there is a sensual romance between Jace and Ally being narrated in its most unique style, which is commendable.

Trying to adjust his return to his family, and pretending to feel being okay, Jace has to go through an emotional turmoil as some mishap happens during a party. Being unaware of the reality, Jace is left without any clue and slowly and gradually learns his family is keeping away some secret from him. Sometimes, a truth, if hidden, is good for the benefit of the whole family, but unfortunately Jace has strong suspicions and uncontrolled curiosity and he leaves no stone uncovered to reveal the truth. You have to read the whole story to know how it completely changes Jace’s life upside down upon having a face-off with reality. He never understood how his family was struggling to keep things on track.

Amidst the constant mental struggle, Jace meets an accident, which snatches his memory away for a short duration. Jace has a dream of him being dead and gets to know how much Ally always loved her. Sometimes, dreams help us realise the most beautiful relationships, and this is shown in case of Jace. Being a hero of the story, we can find Jace playing multiple roles such as a son trying to regret for his mistake and adjusting with his family members upon return, facing love rejection and meeting new persons, trying his luck in his family business of grapevine, tormented by an accident which causes a short-term memory loss, and finally facing the consequences of his own curiosity to know a dark secret.

The book is well-edited and has chapters nicely segregated, however there are some minor errors and typos, which are negligible. The foreword at the beginning of each chapter is fantastically written; it serves as a gist of respective chapter. It steers emotions of the readers as it feels like some practical advice on life and life’s reality is being shared.

I loved reading the book thoroughly. With an amazing story plot and nice cast, the story is absolutely a treat to read. I enjoyed reading all the chapters of the book. I highly recommend this book to all the readers. The end of the story is filled with twists and a message for the readers as well. I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars as the book well-deserves it.
