Weakness by Charlie Green was a very enjoyable read that I would classify as a crime drama. This book was very hard for me to put down. The story drew me in almost immediately with its realistic take on a man trying to make a living the only way he knows how. This is one of those rare books where you find yourself rooting for the guy who excels at breaking the law. You know he is wrong, but you are empathetic about his struggle.
Rick finds himself in prison for the second time for dealing drugs. While he contemplates going straight and finding a legal way to take care of his family, he finds out he was in the wrong drug business to be making any kind of money. He learns all he can about how to make money in the drug business and comes up with a plan. We follow his journey in setting up his new drug dealing business and the aftermath of the decisions he made along the way.
While I was rooting for Rick to not get caught, I did not like him as a person. The way he treats women just did not sit well for me. His disregard for their feelings and his tendency to just look at them as conquest put him right in the jerk category in my eyes. His own daughter is not spared in his quests to outsmart the law and make more money. I could tell when his conscience would kick in and he would have doubts about bringing her into the equation, but that always seemed to get pushed to the side.
I think Charlie Green did a great job in bringing the story to life for the reader. It was a nice change to read a book where the main character was not the cliché hero. It is not a happily ever after, find love, and everything is right in the world kind of book. It is a look into the down and dirty side of dealing drugs.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because this story will hold the reader’s attention until the very last page. I think anytime an author can make you root for the bad guy, that author has skills beyond measure. I felt like these characters are like the people you would find if you went to the bad part of town in the middle of the night. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Green’s books in the future.
