Review of Like My Mother Before Me
Like My Mother Before Me is a supernatural horror novel by Naley Gonzalez that delivers an engaging blend of suspense, family dynamics, and teenage struggles. The protagonist, Alizé, is a relatable high school junior who juggles the usual challenges of adolescence with the extraordinary burden of seeing ghosts and having premonitions. Gonzalez expertly balances these elements, making Alizé's experiences both believable and compelling.
The story is set in a seemingly normal high school environment where Alizé is just another student trying to navigate her way through classes and softball practices and hanging out with her best friend, Estelle. Their friendship is authentic and heartwarming, providing a strong emotional core amidst the unfolding supernatural events.
Family dynamics play a crucial role in the narrative. Alizé's father, Gabriel, is a strict yet loving single parent who has been raising Alizé and her brother since their mother's untimely death in a car accident. The interactions within this family are beautifully portrayed, adding warmth and realism to the story. The relationship between Alizé and her godmother is particularly touching and adds another layer of familial love and support.
The arrival of Martín, a mysterious boy obsessed with Alizé, introduces a romantic subplot that is both intriguing and unsettling. Martín's character is well-fleshed out, and his obsession with Alizé adds a layer of tension and mystery to the plot.
Gonzalez’s writing is tight and suspenseful, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The plot is well-structured, with no unnecessary subplots or filler content. The pacing is perfect, allowing the suspense to build gradually and leading to a satisfying climax. One of the most commendable aspects of the book is its clean, error-free prose. There are no grammatical errors or typos, making for a smooth and enjoyable reading experience.
There is nothing I dislike about the book. While the novel contains some non-borderline profanity and instances of violence, it avoids graphic erotic scenes, making it suitable for a wide range of readers. The supernatural elements are handled with finesse, and the horror aspects are chilling without being overly grotesque.
In conclusion, Like My Mother Before Me is a must-read for fans of supernatural thrillers and horror and deserves 5 out of 5 stars. Naley Gonzalez has crafted a gripping tale that combines relatable characters, tight plotting, and heartwarming relationships. Highly recommended for young adults and adults alike. This novel is sure to leave readers eagerly awaiting Gonzalez's next work.
