Hidden Secrets: A Daniel Grant Secret Service Thriller by Wendy Charlton is a brilliant political thriller. The story unfolds in July 2019. Central to the story is the Good Friday Agreement, which restored peace in Northern Ireland. However, some former IRA militants turned to drugs, arms, and human trafficking. Among them was Dessie McFee, an IRA hitman and a glorified member of the trafficking cartel. After witnessing the atrocious crimes that the trafficking cartel was committing, Dessie decided to inform MI5. Daniel Grant, the head of MI5, instantly arranged for Dessie’s safe passage to Britain so he could deliver his intelligence. But what lies ahead for Dessie? Will MI5 succeed in curtailing the cartel’s operation?

Wendy Charlton’s Hidden Secrets is one of the best and most memorable political thrillers I have read recently. The suspenseful plot, the unexpected twists, the fast-moving action, and the thoroughly developed characters made it an awesome, unputdownable story. The brilliant humor offered a much-needed respite from the tensions of the plot. But what made this book stand out for me was the pride and awe I felt for MI5, especially for establishing Shady Fields, the retirement home for the former MI5 and MI6 agents. Offering comfort and care to the elderly agents, many of whom had dementia, Shady Fields protected them and Britain from the inadvertent disclosure of classified information. And, reading about the residents of the Shady Fields, I enjoyed the wisdom their life stories conveyed. My favorite quote is, “A true soldier fights because he loves what is behind him, not because he hates what’s in front of him.” (page 169).

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The only aspect that prevents me from giving this book the highest rating is the typographical errors, as it feels like the novel has yet to be professionally edited. So, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I highly recommend this brilliant novel to political thriller, suspense, and crime fiction fans.
