Review of The Game of Five: The Chronicles of Darkened Wings
The Game of Five: The Chronicles of Darkened Wings by Robert Wayne McCoy is book one of the Darkened Wings horror series. The story revolves around a group of childhood friends who come together after twenty-nine years following the tragic murder of their friend. The manner of his death matches the MO of the at-large serial killer, The Fisher King. The killer preys on seemingly unrelated victims, leaving his calling card of Valentine candies and removing their hearts. Supernatural elements at play make the killer even more elusive. Each friend suddenly finds themselves deeply involved in catching and convicting the killer. To the killer, the murders are a game that they must figure out before they and their families are the next victims.
The author takes great care to develop each character and their storylines. The author then weaves in these stories to make a complex plot. Though this story is of the horror genre, it explores themes of good vs. evil, faith, redemption, and free will. The story grips you from the beginning and the author uses the perfect tone to blend eeriness and suspense.
I rated The Game of Five: The Chronicles of Darkened Wings 4 out of 5 stars. The story was fast-paced and kept me engaged from the beginning to the end. The first scene began with an interrogation which set the perfect stage for an amazing plot. The story was imaginative and wild with unexpected plot twists and suspense. The author also did a phenomenal job of building scenes, especially when describing the supernatural realm of the Borderlands.
One thing that kept me from rating this book a full 5 stars was the number of typos throughout the book. The errors I noted included missing punctuation, spacing errors, and a misspelled name. Also, as earlier stated, the story was complex which, to me, made it hard to follow at times.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. This book begins a new series, and I am interested to see where the author will take the story from here. There is a fair amount of profanity and may be gory at times. I think anyone who enjoys horror stories with supernatural elements will enjoy this book.
