Review of Photofinish
"Photofinish" by Cheryl Kerr is a suspenseful novel that involves the reader in the investigation of Rory Kind's death, a respected and famous horse trainer, as told through the experiences of his granddaughter, who can't move on from this terrible event until the mysteries of his death are answered.
After a sequence of events convinced the granddaughter, Rory, that her grandfather's death was not an accident, as the police believe, she becomes involved in the police investigation. As a result, Rory begins to recall her early years and the experiences she had while growing up with her grandfather.
Rory finds herself on a path of self-discovery in addition to a criminal investigation, as she must now determine how much of her life she is living due to her own choices and how much is just following in her grandfather's footsteps.
The book takes the reader on an immersive journey into the world of horses and racing, which I find fascinating because it covers everything from horse breeding to race preparation and all the different professions involved, including helpers, reporters, photographers, and so on.
The author writes in an engaging style that makes the reader feel all the mixed emotions that come with the loss of a loved one and the long road a girl must get through when she loses the most important person in her life, made more complex by the fact that she had to separate her personal life from her business life.
The only thing that makes it a bit harder for me to follow are the technical phrases used to explain this intricate industry, which aren't always understood by everyone. I had to do some research to comprehend some of the story's details. It can be a little puzzling for readers who are unfamiliar with this environment because horse and racing terminology are not usually explained.
My rating for this book is 5 out of 5 because the author has created a story with complex characters and a very well-detailed environment that keeps the reader engaged throughout the book. I did find a few grammatical errors in the narrative, but they were minor enough that they didn't interfere with the understanding of the story. Overall, this is a well-written and well-edited book.
I will recommend this book to fans of mysteries and detective stories, as well as those involved in any aspect of the horse racing world. In terms of age, it doesn't contain any strong language or explicit sexual content, making it suitable for young adult readers.
