Review of E M P Honeymoon
I describe EMP Honeymoon as a postmodern romance, suspenseful thriller, and geopolitically-inflected stealth novel written by Dorothy May Mercer. What is special about this novel is its high energy, making it a roller coaster with which readers are left picking up the pieces after the wild ride.
Stylish and funny at first, this tropical holiday turns into a game of survival for young couple Kelly and her husband Tom. In Mercer’s hands, one is to believe that living a family life in the Caribbean has tension as high as the threat of the apocalyptic global event. The way the author navigates between small and deeply personal scenes focused on the characters and epic world events is something that leaves the reader spellbound.
It is interesting to note that, for a character usually left on the periphery in such thriller movies, Kelly turns out to be a strong protagonist. She grew from a pretty, young bride into a strong-willed woman who is ready to conquer the world, and this looks entirely believable. Tom, her supportive partner, responds with his earthy humor to bring some realism and calmness to the situation. Unlike other novels where a relationship becomes subordinate to the story line, love in this novel enhances the reader’s concern for the main characters survival.
They took much effort to try and research every single plausible outcome of an EMP attack and put all of it into the book. The novel depicts the future as a wasteland of shadows, a very real dystopian heaven, reminding us all of the fact that in today’s world, we are in the dark even in the light of the internet. However, the story doesn’t turn into a realm of hopelessness. It is not a celebration of triumph but rather a symbol of human strength that proves the ability of human life to strive in adverse conditions.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars since EMP Honeymoon is more than an exciting thriller; it is a philosophical novel about love, fidelity, and the vulnerability of the civilized world. I knew it was a book that wanted to be chewed on and talked about, and its message was not easily forgotten. Mercer has done that; she has written a daring piece of literature that will bring out the joy in readers, the chill down their spines, and the desire to read more. There can hardly be anything that I dislike about the book, and the editing was excellent as well. This is a new classic, a thriller that defines what it means to be a thriller, a unique example for the upcoming books of this genre.
