[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Murder and Lyrics" by Lacynda Mathes.]
Murder and Lyrics is a fictional crime novel by Lacynda Mathes, released in 2024. The book masterfully explores themes of crime, justice, love, family, and friendship through a chilling and engaging narrative, made accessible by Mathes's clear and straightforward language.
The story follows Gavin Mahoney, a professor in the Criminal Justice Department at the University of Mary Washington, unexpectedly drawn back into the police force as a chief detective. This return is prompted by a series of murders committed by a serial killer who sends familiar lyrics before each kill. The killer's targets, often close to Gavin, include his colleagues at the university. As the detectives, along with the public, grapple with the cryptic lyrics, they mistakenly apprehend Marcus, an autistic individual, before Gavin identifies the true killer—his childhood bully. The novel then shifts its focus to unraveling the killer's motives and his vendetta against Gavin.
Mathes weaves a compelling narrative that oscillates between Gavin's past and present, revealing chilling childhood experiences that fuel the story's suspense. The settings transition seamlessly from cozy, loving homes to high-pressure workplaces and hospitals filled with grief, adding layers of emotional depth and keeping the reader thoroughly engaged.
Murder and Lyrics is structured logically and coherently, with a gradual buildup of conflict that culminates in a satisfying climax. The book's simplicity in style, clear language, and lack of grammatical or typographical errors ensure a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. Mathes effectively employs suspense, with short, suspenseful chapters that allow readers to pause and digest the unfolding drama.
The novel features a complex cast of characters, each contributing significantly to the plot and theme development. From the caring Gavin and his supportive wife Deb to Deb's ex-husband Dan and his wife Miranda, and the elusive Bob, Deb's uncle, each character is crafted with care and creativity, showcasing Mathes's storytelling prowess.
There is little to criticize in this book. The style, language, character development, and use of flashbacks in a suspenseful manner make Murder and Lyrics a unique and captivating read. I wholeheartedly award this book 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to mature readers, regardless of religious affiliation, who enjoy serial killer novels.
