Review of The Old Corsair
The Old Corsair by Michael DeStefano is a read that's full of marvelous naval adventure rich in historical intrigue and present-day espionage. Lieutenant Junior Grade Terrie Murphy is assigned a new duty post, where she unravels mysteries from the 18th century. Principal characters include enigmatic Captain Vernon "Cyclops" Tunney and the intractable Commander Crabtree. It's full of twists, from the discovery of a mysterious stone wall to the grim evidence of what actually happened to Terrie's sister Margaret.
The book weaves past and present in a nice manner and comes up with a bombshell about the fabled ship, Neptune's Trident. The story is rich with historical references and modern-day espionage that interlace into a thick plot, keeping the reader on his or her toes. It is in the storytelling that DeStefano really comes into his own, blending action and suspense with historical detail in a manner that is both convincing and marvelous.
Characterization is vivid, with each of them speaking in their own voice and developing their own character. For example, Terrie is portrayed as a strict, intellectual officer still reeling under the shock of her sister Margaret's death. Her eagerness to find out who murdered her sister and her relentless pursuit of getting involved with the case fully reveal her resiliency and dimension. For instance, the recurrent nightmares of Margaret and the picking and solving of puzzles all show that she has a complicated mind and emotional stress.
Besides, the dialogues in the book, as natural as they are, complement the rest of the narration. The emotional depth of the story adds to the complexity of the book, which makes it an indeed interesting read. Beyond the characters, it is also the plot that has unexpected twists and turns from beginning to end, which will keep the readers rolling on the floor.
The plot is really intricately woven and has so many unexpected events that kept me engaged all through. The emotional depth of the storyline adds an extra layer of complexity and makes it a very compelling read. There were no obvious typos or grammatical errors; the use of tenses was also astute. I will definitely recommend this book to history lovers and anyone who likes a good naval adventure.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because the compelling plot, well-rounded characters and careful historical research make it a read above most. Seamlessly inserted historical details and the emotional depth of the story give it further appeal. DeStefano is an accomplished storyteller who has woven a rich, immersive reading experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. This book must be read by all who love historical fiction and mystery. Further, anyone who loves solid characters and complicated plots will truly be engaged by Terrie Murphy's story and the mysteries she unravels. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
