The book "Edwin Steelside searching out the devil" by Bradford Bennett is an engaging blend of mystery, drama, and the emotional depth of the characters. The novel opens with a dramatic and tragic scene set in a theater, where a performance turns deadly. This immediately grabs your attention, creating a tense atmosphere that sets the stage for the rest of the story. Edwin Steelside is a former police inspector turned private detective, which adds a classic detective noir vibe to the narrative. His complex background involving a failed marriage and a desire to return to hands-on detective work makes him a relatable and compelling protagonist.

Edwin meets with a scientist, Dr. Sydney, to discuss the science behind athletic drug use. The conversation delves into the use of performance-enhancing drugs like EPO, their impact on sports, and potential future developments. The exchange highlights the ethical and health risks involved. Edwin collaborates with Monique, a marathon runner, to inspect a racecourse.

After this, Edwin, a private detective, meets Jaybob, a rugged ex-Navy SEAL, in a Texas diner to discuss a dangerous investigation. Ed plans to dig into a series of news stories possibly linked to a serial killer and the Texan-Aryan Brotherhood. Despite the high risks, Jaybob agrees to join Ed on this perilous mission.

The dialogue is sharp, and the interactions between characters feel authentic, particularly in how they convey their emotions and tensions. The book also weaves in elements of classic whodunit mysteries with modern twists, like the use of a prop gun in a theater, reminiscent of true crime stories. I appreciate how the story will keep you guessing, with multiple suspects and motives that deepen the mystery as the plot unfolds. The book's editing was excellent, with no mistakes or flaws.

In the book "Edwin Steelside searching out the devil" by Bradford Bennett, I have not found any dislikes. The blend of character depth, suspense, and a richly atmospheric setting makes it a gripping read. The story has a gritty, engaging scene that sets the tone for a thrilling mystery. It is filled with suspense, danger, and vivid descriptions of Texas life. The narrative combines suspense, scientific inquiry, and a touch of humor, painting a vivid picture of the challenges and complexities surrounding athletic performance and integrity. The characters are well-drawn, making the dialogue engaging and informative, so I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I suggest this book for mystery lovers and fans of detective novels. Those interested in crime stories with twists and emotional depth will appreciate it.
