Michael DeStefano's book is a gripping blend of historical fiction and modern thriller. The story follows Lieutenant Terrie Murphy as she investigates the mysterious vanishing of the Justice and its captain, Arthur Ledbetter. As she looks deeper into old records and connects the dots between a world of ancient secrets that culminate in global espionage, The Old Corsair deals with themes of telling us the truth, loyalty, and quest for justice, and whose intricately designed plot structure is meticulously developed throughout its entirety and well-developed characters that guarantee its position as one of the best in its genre.

What I liked the most about the book is that it had a very strong, intellectual, and focused female protagonist. Terrie Murphy is one of those protagonists who can be resilient and smart in character at the same time. She skillfully handled her job, personal traumas, and passion for uncovering historical truths. She pursued her purpose through this many-barrelled attack, losing her sister and the incredulous behavior of fellow journalists against all sorts of odds.

Her strength and character then become very inspiring, evidence of how we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. My acceptability of a strong female lead is proof of a kind of writing style that this author applies well to make Terrie a worthy character to admire and learn from. The book was exceptionally well edited and error-free.

Nothing is left to be disliked in this book. One of its most exciting features is how it has combined fact and fiction. Detailed descriptions of old newspapers, meticulous research, and the suspenseful uncovering of secrets buried over the years make it an excitable read. The way it combines history and mystery will make the book both an entertaining and informative read, so one would be bound to have an interesting read from cover to cover.

This book gets full 5 out of 5 stars from me. I’m impressed with the strong and smart traits in the character of Terrie Murphy; she carries more of the backstory/intellectual/moral encouragement but is very well-balanced. This historical fiction, mixed with modern-day thriller elements and a well-researched plot, is laced with suspense the whole time, making it an interesting read and influencing my perfect rating as well. This is recommended to fans of history stories with great characterization.
