Edwin Steelside searching out the devil is a detective novel by Bradford Bennett, and it was really intriguing to follow the skilled investigator Ed Steelside through a labyrinth of murder, deceit, and intrigue. The action picks up after the mysterious death of Alexia, whereby Ed becomes embroiled with suspects like her estranged husband, Enrico Llanos; a reckless director named Jeb Brookstone; and an enigmatic casting director named Brandy Harris. The further Ed delves, the more he uncovers a plot involving a record-breaking marathon runner, Hernando Montregalo, and a sinister figure known as El Sombra. There are turns of events, so many that will leave one on the edge of his seat.

Bennett's skill in character was exquisite; each character in the story was well-crafted and unique. That is what makes them glow with distinctive personalities, backgrounds, and motivations—so vividly different in my mind. The characters are not simply names on paper for me; they live like actual people, to whom the reader has the ability to connect and sympathize. Edwin Steelside, the protagonist, strikes as a savvy detective with an entire background.

He is a retired Chief Inspector of the Vancouver Police Force who turned into a private investigator. All his experiences—the divorce, the need to do some real detective work—shaped his character. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.

There was nothing to dislike in this book. From the characters to the plot, even up to the background stories and all, it was uniquely refreshing. Again, top editing and formatting were done. Therefore, with all these put into mind, I could say boldly that I did really enjoy the book from start to finish. I will definitely recommend this to fans of detective novels and thriller genres, particularly with regard to intrigue, complex plots, and well-developed characters.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because Bennett is deft with the characters; all of them come with very distinct personalities, etched-out backgrounds, and motivations well-defined. The protagonist of the novel is Edwin Steelside, an experienced detective with a diverse background from his experiences in the past and his personal commitment to being a hands-on detective.
