Review of Devils Retribution
Devil's Retribution by Chris Thomasson is about a man named Jack Johnson who overcomes his life of crime and drugs, which spiraled out of control after his brother's and parents' deaths. After his grandparents' deaths, he receives a box containing letters from his grandparents and parents and two necklaces as part of his inheritance. He reads the letter from his grandparents, who tell him that his purpose in life will soon be revealed to him. He leads a successful life and meets and becomes engaged to Leila, an antiquarian who studies relics and ancient manuscripts. He doesn't read the letter from his parents because he resents them for leaving him with his grandparents while they took care of his ill brother until things went horribly wrong for him, and he loses everything. Reading his parents' letter puts him on the path to his true destiny. What did the letter reveal? What significance do the necklaces have?
Chris Thomasson has done a fantastic job with character and demographic development in this book. I could easily visualize Lucifer's black slicked-back hair and the Golden Chamber under the castle with everything coated in gold leaf. Further depth in the storyline is brought by the descriptions of how dark powers created Lucifer. Good, evil, loyalty, love, betrayal, and manipulation are just a few of the emotions I encountered in this book. I liked that the author included ancient legends and myths in the storyline. For example, there is a Greek legend about the Necklace of Marmonia (sic) and a Cornish myth about the devil's fear of going to Cornwall. "When all may look lost, there is always another way" is my favorite quote in this book because it inspires hope.
The lack of professional editing was the only negative aspect I encountered in this book. One example of the many errors I encountered is the misspelling of the "Necklace of Marmonia," which should be the "Necklace of Harmonia." I enjoyed the storyline because of the many positive aspects discussed above, the suspense and mystery throughout the book, and the ending that promises more to come. Four out of five stars is the perfect rating for this book because its only flaw is its poor editing.
This book is for fans of the C/T/M/H genre who enjoy lots of action and adventure. However, sensitive readers may want to avoid it because it contains non-borderline profanity.
