Cruel Lessons by Randy Overbeck is more than a mystery story. It is more than a thriller. It is well written, and there were no errors in my read-through. I couldn’t put it down. This story circles around a drug problem plaguing a small town’s school system. With so much tragedy, the town wants to find out who was supplying these drugs. They want to figure out who they could pin everything on to get justice for the children, their families, and the community. With a mindset like that sometimes it's less about real justice and more about vengeance. The main character, Ken, is fighting against the clock, and the police in his search to try and find out who is responsible for drugs making their way into the school.

There were so many threads I was following. Each one ties together into a braid at the end of the story. I was caught up in trying to figure out who the police were looking for. I enjoyed that there was drug addiction sprinkled all over the book. Not too much, but just enough to show how much of an epidemic drugs are. Each person who had their hands in drugs, whether past or present had different reasons for it.

Randy Overbeck paced the story well. There weren’t any dragging moments to me or too much that he could have done without. Some intimate scenes were in this story that I thought were oddly placed or didn’t need to be there for the overall plot. This was the only reason that I had deducted from my rating. I felt like they were just there for the sake of having it there rather than adding anything to the plot or story.

For all these reasons listed above, I give this read four out of five stars. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Anyone who likes questions, crime, and trying to figure out who the villain is before the last pages. I look forward to any future reads from Randy Overbeck.

Thanks for the review! Cruel Lessons sounds like a gripping mystery that tackles serious issues in a small town. The way it connects different storylines and keeps the suspense high seems really interesting. It looks like a great pick for fans of crime stories!
