Demon Freaks, by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison follows the story of twin brothers Bing and Ron Slaughter on the night before their SAT test. They need to study to do well and get into college, instead of having to flip burgers at the McDonald's their parents run. Which is how they come to spend the evening at their friend's cabin in the woods with their band-mates, Meat and Kaitlyn. An all night study session should get them ready for the test. Or an all night jamming session...whatever works.
Their evening is interrupted when a massive thunderstorm breaks out and a mysterious robed figure appears running towards the cabin. Suddenly there's a cursed knife, a psychotic history teacher, and a missing band member. Now the teens will have to go on an epic adventure against the mysterious Servants of Darkness and the most terrifyingly evil group of all, the Golfers Association, in an effort to stop them from sacrificing innocents to raise a demon.
J.R.R.R. Hardison has an excellent grasp of comedy and it shows to full effect in this book. It's almost more horror parody than true horror, and I mean that in the best possible way. The book is fast-paced, nearly non-stop action, yet there's always another joke coming, more witty word play, more silly banter. The main characters are hilarious and sweet, you can't help but to root for them. The mystery is engaging, there are so many twists and turns that it's almost impossible to predict what comes next.
There was very little I didn't like about this book. The character development was a bit slow, the action so fast-paced that it takes over the story at times and it takes a little while to really get to know the protagonists. There was only one error in editing that I noticed; after the first paragraph in Chapter 21 the font suddenly shrinks to a smaller size and stays that smaller size for the rest of the book.
All in all I found this book to be a rollicking good time and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys supernatural horror stories with a hefty dose of comedy thrown in. It made me laugh out loud multiple times, earning me quite a few funny looks in the lunch room at work. I happily give Demon Freaks 4 out of 4 stars. It's a highly enjoyable read.
