Review of The Good Driver

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Good Driver" by Gary A James.]
Max Doren has been a truck driver for many years and now works for Buffalo Bill Transport or BBT. His boss is Rick Barnes, who always gave Max a hard time. Rick always gave him the not so nice runs to the not so nice stops, and Max would always be blamed when things didn't go as planned on the trip. One day, Rick gave Max a run to Seattle, Washington, during a bad snowstorm. The storm was predicted to be the worst that anyone had ever seen, with more than a foot of snow predicted. Max had driven through snowstorms many times. In fact, he was heralded as the best driver in snowstorms for his company. The problem was that they gave him four days to do it and to be there by 6 a.m. on a Thursday. All the drivers at BBT said that it couldn't be done and that Max should refuse the load. Rick told Max that he would be fired if he didn't do the run. Did Max get to Seattle to meet the 6 a.m. deadline? Why was Rick so hard on Max, who was an excellent, hard-working driver?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, The Good Driver, by Gary A. James. There was nothing to disapprove of. My husband was a truck driver for 50 years before he retired, and I understood the truck driver jargon in this book. The book is divided into three parts. It also has some mystery crime-solving for you to do. The book's third part has some exciting surprises you will not expect. Some are good surprises, and some are bad. You get an opportunity to get to know Max. He was an honest guy doing an honest day's work, but it was never good enough. If not for his financial situation, he would have quit his job and gone elsewhere. I felt empathy for him as he had nowhere to turn. The other characters were well-developed, and the author chose to explain each character so that you thought you knew them personally. I liked the author's style of writing, which was easy and uncomplicated. Even though it centered around truck drivers, there was only one obscene word, and the sexual scenes were more suggestive than descriptive.
There were a few spelling and grammatical errors, but I still felt that the book was well-edited. I only recommend this book to adults, as the suggestive sex scenes would not be appropriate for a younger adult. I am happy to bestow this book and author 5 out of 5 stars. I know that you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
