Bing and Ron Slaughter are identical twins who work very hard to be different from each other, because twinning on top of being twins would be, according to their own personal rules, an offence towards being “mutant cutesy geeks whose prime talent is provoking others to vomit”.
After royally landing themselves in trouble for performing a song with their band, that trashes their teacher-nemesis Mr. Brom, they now must do exceedingly well on their SAT test to have even a smidgeon of hope for higher education and employment outside McDonalds.
Although it’s not a great idea to study at a remote cabin in the woods, the night before the all-important life changing test, together with the other Ephit (their current band name) members, Prathamesh “Meat” Kimitri (drummer) and Kaitlyn Krimpsen (keyboard), Bing and Ron still go along with the not so brilliant plan. Things soon go topsy-turvy when a great massive lightning storm strikes, cutting off the power and starting a sequence of events that will squeeze out of them every ounce of courage they have and maybe a bit more.
Now they must fight off Golfers’ Association, which has horde of maniacal members that make the usual everyday insane cultists, Satan worshipers and evil wizards look like elderly nuns, kill supernatural monsters called teethheads (charming name that fits very well) and make do with a powerful mind-controlling blade that evokes the Lord of The Rings One Ring to Rule Them All comparison.
Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is full of spooky and surprisingly hilarious scenes, sincere emotions and constant kick-ass action. I especially love the solid unwavering sense of right and wrong that our awesome foursome has and it’s such a fresh breath of air to see these friendship dynamics in play, that are equal to the good old Buffy the Vampire Slayer gang days.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars and if I could get away with it, it would receive some plus stars on top of it, because it is just shock-full of pure mayhem, fun and unexpected twists and turns. Although it is labeled under the Crime, Thriller, Mystery and Horror Book section (C, T, M, H), I would say it is aimed more for the Young Adult reader. I still most definitely recommend it to anyone, young or old, who has kept their sense of adventure and love for light humour. It’s quite clear that Hardison has wormed his way into my fantasy-loving heart and has an assured place next to my other all-time favourite authors. I’m looking forward to reading more of anything he writes and especially would love to see this book as the first one in the series.
