Rodger Ghost Sims’ book The Dead Speak was a thought-out thriller. There were a lot of different plot points, but the author does a really good job at weaving them together. Things that seemed unrelated at face value ended up coming back around to one another in a way that was super fun to read. I found no errors in this book during my read and that let me get immersed in Joey Stillman’s story.

A military man, Joey Stillman decided to join a group with some of his friends to explore an old cave system in Clarksville. While deep inside the cave he snaps and bludgeons one of the other explorers resulting in a bloody aftermath of confusion and heartache.

Joey doesn’t remember the attack, but he can see the damage right in front of him. One of the lead explorers, Mary, even recorded the whole thing, and Joey is forced to accept that he had done something atrocious when he blacked out.

This story follows Joey’s trial but also, more importantly, all the horrible things that happened over the years in those caves. Are they connected? Will Joey get justice? Or will the park rangers simply reopen the cave after everything, ready to pull in its next victims?

I enjoyed the flow of this book and all the threads which were woven together at the end. I thought the characters could have been described better than just listing height, weight, and hair color though. I prefer those descriptions to be a little more organic than listed there on the page the way it was. This was the only negative thing I had to say about the book.

For all the reasons I stated I rate the book four out of five stars. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys thriller and mystery books. I look forward to seeing what else this author puts out in the future.

Despite the characters' description being possibly too focused on their physical characteristics, this seems like an engaging thriller with the mystery possibly connected to a cave. There are various threads that come together in the end for a satisfactory climax. Thank you for your great review!
