[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Legend" by Koo Yu.]
Legend by Koo Yu is a unique debut novella that blends crime mystery and psychological thriller with a touch of paranormal fantasy. The story unfolds in Normandio, an imaginary town in Northern Europe. James Harris and Zachary Hunter were police officers shot dead on an abandoned construction site. There were no witnesses, but the police accused Zachary Hunter of shooting his fellow officer. Convinced that Zachary was innocent, his sister asked Leon Chase, a billionaire philanthropist with a keen interest in mysteries, for help to clear Zachary’s name. At the same time, Gavin Miles, the Chief Inspector of the Major Crimes Unit, asked Leon to look into this case too. Gavin was not convinced about Zachary’s fault, but once Gavin resumed the investigation, Gavin's superior assigned him to another case. Intrigued, Leon invited his friend, Finn Parker, to join forces in this investigation. Finn Parker, who had accidentally become immortal four thousand years ago, keenly agreed. What will Leon and Finn discover?
Koo Yu’s Legend is of unusually high quality for a debut. It had everything I would expect of a cozy crime story—a crime, a mystery, atmospheric settings, witty sleuths unraveling previously missed clues, and a psychological undercurrent. It was an immersive read I finished in one sitting, thoroughly enjoying every episode. I liked how Finn and Leon reconstructed the crime scene and interviewed the relatives of the victims. I also liked Finn’s ascetic lifestyle and cooking recipes. But most of all, I liked the unexpected and thought-provoking ending and how the weather interplayed with the revelations of the truth. Leon and Finn have joined the ranks of my favorite sleuths, and I will be looking forward to their new investigations.
I disliked nothing in this brilliant work of fiction, so I happily rate it five out of five stars.
I highly recommend this awesome novella to crime mystery and psychological thriller fans.
