The description for Akelarre Under The Sun by Shane Hallawa says that it is the story of Anthony, a former soldier, who goes on vacation to visit his family, and on a sailing trip they come across a missing cargo ship. Upon finding the ship, they determine that its disappearance is connected to a larger world power that they must go up against.

I am a huge fan of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure books so I jumped at the chance to read Hallawa’s book. However, to be honest, I found the book extremely confusing and had to read through it twice in the hopes of understanding the plot. Even after the second read through, I am still a bit confused as to what I read. The book starts out slowly with a mysterious meeting between two men, then the focus of the story switches to Anthony’s family and discussions of mundane, everyday topics. The shift was abrupt and extremely confusing. It was as though an entire portion of the book was cut out and I was missing important information. These shifts occurred throughout the book, and it was not until about halfway through that I got to the story that was advertised in the summary.

Once I reached the part of the book that contained the plot that I was searching for, I enjoyed the story. It was action packed with a dash of fantasy and mystery. This part of the book moved quickly, and I was drawn in wanting to see what happened next. Unfortunately, it did not last, and there was another abrupt switch back to mundane topics such as clothing again. The ending of the book picked up a bit and connected back to the main plotline, and I can see where the author is attempting to go if they decide to make this a series, but overall, it left me confused. Hence the reason I decided to read it a second time. I was positive that I was missing something, but when I again reached the end, I was left just as confused as the first time.

Overall, the book is not bad. The author has an interesting story, it is just buried beneath unneeded exposition and description. If they did a bit more editing to focus on the main plotline the book would be an exciting, fast-paced, thriller as it was advertised to be. Because of this I gave the book a 3 out of 5. It is not bad, but it is not something that I would read again or recommend in its current state.
