Review of Dead Woman Walking
“Dead Woman Walking” by Diana Corbitt is a fascinating fictional crime thriller. Set in the coastal town of Rocky Harbor, it details the story of police officer Isabel (Izzy) Santos, as she is tasked with investigating the disappearance of a young woman named Rachael Beckett. With the help of her boss, Detective Fulton, and her intuitive Tita Maggie, Izzy must navigate the mystery of what happened to Rachael. Throughout her attempts to piece everything together, a local prison worker named Danny Vitale turns up missing. Soon, it is up to
Izzy to try to make connections between the two disappearances.
I give “Dead Woman Walking” a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable book and a real page turner. There is a certain
flow to the plot. It will keep readers hooked. I really like that the keys to the mysteries revolving around Racheal and Danny aren’t obvious. The clues surrounding their disappearances are in the midst of twists and turns that create rabbit holes for Izzy, Detective Fulton, and Maggie. Corbitt’s book is written in such a way that readers know just as much as the investigative characters do. Because of that, it’s hard to put the book down. That’s a mark of a good crime novel.
Even though the plot is exciting, there are a couple of reasons why I give “Dead Woman Walking” a less than perfect rating. There are a significant amount of grammar and punctuation errors. It makes the book seem amateurish in parts. Another reason has to do with a part of the plot that involves a third case for Izzy, about a neighbor named Janet. It’s well written, but it left me wondering why it wasn’t given more attention in the book, considering what happens.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys crime thrillers with a hometown feel. There is an element of violence and the supernatural in “Dead Woman Walking” that may be off putting to some readers, but it can be argued that it adds to the appeal. It would make a wonderful addition to many bookshelves.
