Review of Assisting Fate
Assisting Fate by autolemy is the second part of the Walker/Powell trilogy. British producer, songwriter, and author autolemy has produced another novel and album, combining words and music to create an innovative experience for the reader and listener.
The protagonist of the first book, Lee Walker, plays a part in the second book, but the main story is about his grandmother, Nancy Walker, a retired MI6 director. A life of espionage is fraught with danger, and Nancy finds that her past is catching up with her. One part of the story is about Nancy when she was young, how she got involved in MI6, and events that relate to the danger she is in today. The machinations of MI6 are well-described and believable. This novel is a family drama about espionage involving dramatic events and unexpected outcomes.
There are troubles in store for Lee’s mother, stepfather and sister. Child sexual abuse occurs in the book and culminates in a disturbing scene. A gradual build-up to the abuse makes it seem more realistic. Graphic details are kept to a minimum, and the child’s confusion is made apparent.
The characters are well drawn. Nancy is a realistic portrayal of an ex-MI6 director. She combines being ruthless and hard with loving her son and grandchildren. Lee’s view of his grandmother is summed up by “To others she seemed cold, but to Lee she was like a Fox’s Glacier Mint – clear and refreshing.” I found Nancy to be an interesting character but I would have liked a bit more about Lee. I still feel connected with him from the first book.
The writing style flows and is enjoyable to read. The album represents different parts of the story, adding depth and meaning to the overall experience. I enjoyed In Front Of Me, which conveys Lee’s happiness at seeing his grandmother again.
This is an original work which is creative and has depth. I recommend Assisting Fate to readers who enjoy an exciting story with twists and would appreciate the music that complements the book. I found some typos in the book so I will remove one mark. I award this book and album 4 out of 5 stars.
