Murder in the Woods by Katrina Trujillo, is a fun tale of good versus evil in the science fiction genre that includes elements of space travel, murder, mystery, and crime solving.

Colonel Sephtis Baldan is selected as the lead officer of the brand-new Supernatural Investigation Unit. He is tasked with selecting the appropriate crew members for this task force, based on their skills. This is the beginning of an unusual partnership involving a variety of beings with diverse backgrounds and strengths that come together to form a great team. As the story unfolds and the relationships between the characters become clear, it adds depth to the story.

Because of the ease of moving about from world to world, there are illegal ventures, such as black market trading, that law enforcement has to deal with. There are also the evil protagonists who are only looking for personal gain, bringing in life forms from other worlds for this purpose and causing destruction that the task force has to deal with. There are a couple of scenes of torture and murder that might not appeal to some readers because of the graphic nature.

I give the book a 3 out of 5 star rating, mainly because of the number of editing errors I encountered as I read the book. Editing errors included spelling, punctuation, and grammar, which sometimes interfered with my ability to focus on the storyline. I also did not care for the way the last chapter left me hanging. I felt like I needed some closure to this story, considering that at least 2 of the main characters are in a precarious life-or-death position at the end of the last chapter. This could be the first book in a new series of books, but the book shouldn’t end on a cliffhanger.
