Review of The Plain Field
The Plain Field by John F Noone is a supernatural thriller that kept me engaged throughout the storyline. The plot follows the O'Hare family in the early 1980s as they move back to Angela O'Hare's childhood home in Floral Park on Long Island following the passing of Angela's father. Charlie O'Hare stays behind after sending his wife and kids ahead to Floral Park, promising to be right behind them. Charlie stays behind to finish one last task for the Irish mobster Uncle Jimmy but is placed in grave danger by a mysterious box with Native American markings that Uncle Jimmy desperately wants.
As soon as Angela arrives with her children, Erin and Conner, strange things begin happening. Her father's house seems to have strange hidden areas, and she discovers old markings along with her best friend, Dee. Additionally, the children begin encountering supernatural beings within the home. What is the mystery behind the precious box, and how does it connect to the strange happenings in the O'Hare residence?
I enjoyed the inclusion of illustrations within the book, allowing the reader a more thorough understanding of the strange markings Angela finds at the house, the supernatural beings, and the historical layout of Floral Park. I found this inclusion incredibly helpful in a plot with many moving pieces and creative ideas. Furthermore, the historical connection between current events with the O'Hare family and the founders of Floral Park was interesting and was a portion of the plot that I thoroughly enjoyed. The Native American folklore that Angela and Dee uncover may hold the answer to all the mysteries in Floral Park.
I found very little to dislike in this book. I rate The Plain Field 5 out of 5 stars. I found a few minor grammatical errors, though not enough to detract from my enjoyment! The story is set up perfectly for a sequel book, which I look forward to reading if or when it is released. The plot is fast-paced and exciting, following multiple angles of mystery, each delving into the supernatural realm in some way. For readers looking for a thriller with a realistic hint of the supernatural, this book is the way to go. I don't recommend this book to young readers because there is some violence within the book.
