If you are a fan of any type of thriller, crime or mystery novel, you will enjoy this novel. It is so much more than a traditional police procedural!! It's a fast paced thriller that takes you on a spiritual and emotional ride that keeps you wanting more!!
The story starts off in the mind of the killer. We experience a glimpse of what the killer and victim are feeling and the author touches briefly on the motive of the killer. Next it jumps to a 1st person account of small town life in the far southern part of New Zealand. The author has an amazing way of developing the characters, setting and atmosphere that makes it very easy for you to immerse yourself in the life of the characters of the story. We are introduced to the customs and culture of an indigenous Polynesian group of New Zealand people and how the customs and culture affect the search for a killer on the loose.
There are two main characters of the novel. The first main character is Pollo. Pollo is an experienced detective that has been on the force for many years. He is close to the point of being burnt out and has a common unhealthy coping skill of drinking too much, but is still a great detective. Pollo is one of those detectives that has a way of knowing things intuitively and he seems to be trying to teach his partner that skill, which can only be learned through time and experience.
The second main character is Bobby. Bobby seems to be very young and inexperienced, but appears to be the type of person that is a quick learner. He looks up to his partner, Pollo and I would even go as far to say that Pollo is a father figure to him. As the story progresses and we learn about the police investigation from the view point of Bobby, we also notice the emotional and spiritual growth that Bobby is experiencing. This makes it much easier to relate to Bobby and become empathetic towards him.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I have no complaints about the book!! The book was very fast paced and the characters were very easy to relate to. The author did a great job of educating the reader on basic police procedure and forensic psychology, which makes this a great book for first time readers of police procedural novels as well as fans of the genre. We also get a glimpse of the customs and culture of the Maori people of New Zealand. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read more from this author!!
