DEMON FREAKS BY J.R.R.R. (JIM) HARDISON
Demon Freaks is a funny, nonstop action and supernatural horror tale. The book is based on four friends of a punk band who had planned to meet and study for their SAT, before they were interrupted by a golfer association in their demon summoning plot. The author, Hardison, builds the novel to become indispensable to the reader with the humour, spooky scenes, twists that perfectly tie the story into a neat bow and suspense right from the first chapter to the last.

The book begins with Mr. Brom a teacher to the four friends: Meat, Kaitlyn and the Slaughter twins (Bing and Ron) informing them of a SAT that they will have on the day that follows. An interesting twist develops when actually Mr.Brom is the one who introduces a possessed dagger to Meat and the Slaughter twins in Meat’s cabin where they were to revise for their SAT, signifying the end of their SAT revision and the beginning of their adventure. Kaitlyn arrives late as predictable to the cabin when the show is already on the road but, just in time to save Bing and Ron from the Servants of Darkness and also follow the Meat possessed driven van.

Through the dagger that has a soul of its own and mind controlling ability, the band with Mr. Brom arrive at a golf-course clubhouse, but Kaitlyn and Meat are held captive by the demon worshipping golfers to be sacrificed. It now falls to Bing and Ron to save their friends from this when their teacher Mr. Brom abandons them in the golfers’ library. The book heads to its climax as the Slaughter twins are almost caught by the golfers but escape through an underground tunnel where they face blood thirsty teeth heads. When all hope seems lost and death looms at the faces of the Slaughter twins, the author releases yet another twist which I will leave for the readers that is quite commendable as it ties things together till the end of the book.

In my opinion the author clearly shows favour to Bing Slaughter, it is crystal clear that Bing Slaughter had been overpowered by the teeth head on their first attack with Ron in the tunnel, but he managed to survive with minor injuries. Again where Bing Slaughter had been the only survivor who had been blasted by the evil demon. Clearly shows that the author favoured this character a lot.

It is difficult not to like the author with his ingenious twists, the eloquence of the narrative and the maturity of the writing style. For these reasons and many more I didn’t mention, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I would rate it higher if it was possible because it is a book deserves to be read at a sitting.
