Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. Hardison is a supernatural thriller, relating the story of Bing and Ron Slaughter, as well as their friends Kaitlyn and Meat. The four high school students get sucked into an attempted demon summoning the night before they take their SAT tests. The group gets together to study but are interrupted by their seemingly-possessed history teacher breaking into their cabin and trying to murder them. This is only the beginning of their adventure, as they get sucked into a world of psychic daggers, evil golfers, The Servants of Darkness, and even McDonalds. After Kaitlyn and Meat are captured by the evil golfers, Bing and Ron are determined to rescue them, lest they become the human sacrifice that will summon a demon to do the golfers’ bidding.
I rate Demon Freaks a 4 out of 4 stars. I found the story to be an entertaining ride, perfect for pre-teen readers. The story kept me engaged all the way through with easy to read prose and believable dialogue. While some of the story elements may not be entirely realistic, suspension of disbelief was easy to achieve. In the world of the story nothing seemed out of place or unbelievable. In fact, this world seemed like somewhere that anything could happen.
There are, perhaps, a few moments of violence and a little bit of harsh language, but nothing that I would consider inappropriate or too much for pre-teens to handle. For example, Ron’s favorite exclamation seems to be “Jesus Christ!” and Meat often catches himself thinking of naked women. Despite the protests of some parents, I would call these two examples accurate depictions of teenage behavior and hardly something that would corrupt their pre-teens.
The ease in which I found myself absorbed in the universe created in Demon Freaks is the primary reason I gave it a four star review. There was nothing distracting in the prose to pull me out of the story and I found myself rooting for the kids to defeat all of the evil creatures and people being hurled their way. Character growth is handled fantastically as well. All four kids start out as teenagers being teenagers but have moments where they show they are truly good people who will do everything they can to rescue their friends.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone pre-teen and above. I believe that even adults would find it an entertaining, easy read. I hope that Hardison is considering further stories in this world, either with the same characters or others, as his writing style and world building are hugely entertaining and I look forward to reading more.
