Demon Freaks is a hilarious horror novel by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison, that tells the story of Bing and Ron Slaughter, identical twins who are part of Ephit, a band that consists of two other members; Prathamesh “Meat” Kimitri, the drummer and Kaitlyn Krimpsen, the keyboardist. The four of them, all in their junior year of high school, have to prep for SATs and they decide to study at a cabin in the woods owned by Meat’s parents. However, things soon go to the wolves when the lightning storm cuts off the power and their history teacher suddenly appears wielding a dagger and tries to murder them.

The group eventually manages to escape and they arrive at golf-course clubhouse. However, this place is not the sanctuary that they expect it to be. There, they are faced with more danger and horror than they ever thought possible. Eventually, instead of studying for their SATs like they had planned, the four band mates find themselves in a race for their lives. Will the four be able to survive the night? Will they finally be able to study for their SATs?

What drew me most to the book was the humor. I loved how the author was able to incorporate it into a horror story. That’s something you just don’t see every day. The characters were highly amusing despite the horrific situations that they found themselves in. In fact, the humor made the spooky and horrific scenes bearable. I don’t think I would have sat through the demons, the speaking dagger and the murderous golf cult without it.

The book was not all about demons and cults. It also contained the subject of self discovery. Each of the main protagonists learnt something new about their relationships. Plus there were some really teachable moments in the book. Like for example, never go into a cabin in the woods, especially one that’s in the middle of nowhere.

I was really impressed by the plot of the book. It flowed effortlessly. It was easy to follow the main characters and understand what was actually going on. Although the book is mostly suited to teens and young adults, I believe that older people can still enjoy it. Younger readers, however, might have a hard time getting past the spooky scenes and violence.

Although I completely loved the book, I was at times intimidated by the constant violence and horror in the book. However, the author tried to smooth it out by using humor something I really appreciated because that’s what saw me through the book.

Overall, I rate Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. Hardison a 4 out of 4. I had a great time reading it. The humor really sold it for me. The plot was really interesting and it kept me engaged the whole time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys supernatural books with a twist.
