Review of The Old Wolf
The Wolf is a ruthless hitman who gets hired to kill people and he does his job expertly without leaving a trace. For decades, no one could identify him, and no one knew his real name. He has been on the Mi5 wanted list as he’s seen as a threat to national security after murdering the Secretary of State for Transport, but yet he’s just like a ghost that couldn’t be caught. On a day like every other day in London, The Wolf visited the post office to collect his pension as a retired soldier. The post office got robbed by four men, and unfortunately, Margery, a staff member in the post office, was murdered, making him seek vengeance for her death because Margery was one of his few acquaintances. Only that this won’t be an easy murder spree as he expected.
The Old Wolf by J.S. Morton is an intriguing book that features dark comedy, which will elicit laughter in readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the dialogues were something I always looked forward to, as the banter between The Wolf and his friends was consistently entertaining. The story portrays a retired former contract killer who is now 68 years old and was forced to go back to his job. This time, it wasn’t about the money but for personal reasons, which is vengeance because “No one kills his Margery.” However, he never knew that the robbery of the post office didn’t end with just the four robbers, but it tied back to a powerful corporation and influential figures. With Mi5 reigniting their pursuit of The Wolf, his mission became far more dangerous than he ever expected.
What I enjoyed most in the book is the camaraderie between The Wolf and his friends who stood by him in his quest for vengeance. The characters are well-developed, and I loved every one of them. Their personalities are funny and likeable, especially Carlene and Buck. Those two can't seem to keep their hands off each other. Jodie, the hacker, is another unique character. I admired her for being good at what she did and how crucial she was in assisting The Wolf. Knowing how they all became friends was fascinating and hilarious. The author did an outstanding job in weaving a captivating story, as there is no dull moment in the book. Though the book is a dark comedy with a lot of killing, it keeps readers laughing until the very last page.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. This is a well-paced thriller, and the story plot is well-developed. Because of that, I rate the book five out of five stars. I can’t wait to read the next installment of this book if there will be one. Readers who are not fans of heavy profane words might find the book a bit off-putting, but for me, it only added more spice to the humour. The book is impeccably well-edited. Kudos to the editor. I recommend the book to lovers of dark comedy.
