The Perfect Way To Go by Dror Kahn is an emotional story of a woman’s decision to conclude her life on her own terms and her family’s realization of what really happened the night she passed. The author states in the afterword that the intent behind the book is to “launch discussions on end-of-life issues.” The characters provide arguments for and against in a way that can make both sides feel heard.

The story opens at the end of Ruth’s funeral reception, as friends are leaving and the immediate family is left behind to clean up and reminisce. Unfortunately, most of the family is on edge. As the story progresses, we learn that each person believes that they were responsible for Ruth’s demise. The chapters alternate between one of the characters sharing their point-of-view from the night Ruth passed and the group talking about what was revealed. This is an excellent way to progress the story, as it does not give away the truth immediately and gives the characters space to express their thoughts and emotions.

The characters are well-written. Ruth’s family expresses their grief and guilt in different ways, all of which feel authentic. Their dialogue is natural, and it is easy to picture them sitting around talking with each other. The only character whose actions I disagree with is Ruth. Regardless of whether or not I believe in someone’s right to determine when their life ends, the way Ruth went about it was selfish. Her intent was to make it impossible for any one family member responsible for her death, but she still caused each one of them to feel the horror and despair of thinking they inadvertently killed her. Their pain is palpable.

Overall, I believe the author created an excellent book that achieves his goal. Anyone who reads this book will walk away reflecting on their own beliefs about an individual’s right to end-of-life decisions. The only reason I rate this 4 out of 5 stars instead of the full 5 is because there are multiple typos/grammatical errors that need to be cleaned up.

It sounds like a powerful and emotionally charged story that tackles a difficult subject. The exploration of grief, guilt, and the ethical questions surrounding end-of-life decisions seems thought-provoking. I like that it offers perspectives from different characters, making the debate feel more balanced. While I’m not sure it would be an easy read, I think it could be worthwhile for anyone interested in stories that challenge personal beliefs and spark meaningful conversations. The emotional depth and the family dynamics would probably resonate, though the reported editing issues might be a bit distracting.

This seems like a novel that digs into some profound issues using Ruth's personal story to explore what happens when a person ends her life and the ramifications that concern family and friends. In this case, there are revelations that affect Ruth's relatives in emotional conversations. Thank you for your great review!
Ciao :)
