Review of Shooting Bogies
Shooting Bogies by Ralph Monti. Lovers of planned crime stories will have a great time reading this cleverly set-up mystery thriller.
There are no unnecessary roundabouts to the storyline. It immediately puts the reader in the midst of the conflict that Rocky Delmonico has gotten himself into. Rocky managed to infuriate Gino Lofaccio at his father’s funeral. The incident was hilarious yet unfortunate. Because of his mistake, the consequence he had to face from the powerful mob family in the neighborhood would alter his life forever. What did he have to do as payback? Had he managed to get out of his predicament alive?
The story is fast-paced. The short, crisp, and straightforward chapters make sure the readers are never distracted from the plot. In addition, the novel introduces quite a few characters who are all distinct and memorable, an achievement of the author’s writing skills. Even some of the very minor characters have a loud and picturesque presence. Rocky is street-smart and makes wise decisions. His love for golf is admirable, making it all the more heartbreaking when his expertise in putting is reduced to ‘shooting bogies.’ The more he hastens to finish up his payback to Gino, the more he becomes troubled because of the truths and realities awaiting him. The story of Howard, Rocky’s golf partner, was disheartening. All other characters experience their own hectic ride as well.
The plot is intricately woven and filled with all the elements that would keep the thrill high. The game-changing twist is sure to sweep readers off their feet. But the author’s writing style also takes the readers deep into the characters’ minds and their inner turmoil. This attachment to the characters allows us to see the justification behind their actions. The crime, while surprising because of the twist, is satisfyingly well-planned. Additionally, humor sprinkled lightly works well throughout.
The only thing that left me hanging is the ending. While it is the most realistic option, its tragic nature left me longing for a fantasized happy ending. But that’s just me. Even then, I’d say it is the best for all the characters involved in the crime. Also, the pacing could’ve occasionally used a breather to let the impact of the situation sink in. Other than that, the novel is cleverly developed.
The editing done on the book is impeccable, and the cover design is a smart fit for the story. This book is a fairly quick read with simple and clear sentences. There are minor instances of profanity, which are not overused. The violence depicted in the book is also not extreme. That makes it appropriate for readers aged 16 and older. This is a great entertainer, and I would give it 5 out of 5. People who enjoy crime novels, love golf, and appreciate memorable characters with unique backgrounds will definitely enjoy this story.

Thank you for the comment!NetMassimo wrote: ↑04 Apr 2025, 13:57 This seems like a well-constructed crime thriller which includes both drama and humor. There are also memorable characters, including some minor characters who can shine in the little room they have. All of this make it an engaging novel, especially for lovers of this genre. Thank you for your great review!
