Review of Voices in the Night

“Voices in the Night” by David T. Wolf is a fictional crime novel filled with intrigue from the very first page. Main character Nick Clayborne listens intently to phone conversations on his scanner. While parked at a secluded spot in San Carlos, California in 1993, he writes fervent notes about the people he listens to. He is engrossed in his hobby, and forms attachments to the strangers. He is especially drawn to one woman named Samantha, and can’t seem to figure out why. There has been a recent crime wave in the area, and Nick’s life starts to slowly and irrevocably change one night as he hears a police call over the scanner and decides to check out the crime scene.
“Voices in the Night” is an exciting thriller. I give it a rating of four out of five stars. One reason for the higher rating is that the novel evokes a sense of nostalgia. The details in the plot that bring the 1990s to mind are written seamlessly, and are fun to picture. Readers will enjoy thinking back to the time when cell phones were less common, and considered a big deal.
The novel is suspenseful and feels real, which is another reason why I give it such a high rating. It is written in the style of a diary. This style is like being in the midst of the dramatic plot as though living it firsthand. The author gives readers a perfect view of Nick’s mind. An eerie web of dangerous connections takes shape as Nick struggles with his moral obligation to the crime victims. What do they all have in common? Should he warn Samantha? The twists and turns in the book are excellent, and will keep readers guessing. The only reason I didn’t give it a perfect rating is because of the editing errors.
“Voices in the Night” will appeal to readers who want to delve into a retro thriller with a mystery and romance included. It is important to know that certain chapters contain violence that might be difficult to get through. The novel is a great addition to its genre.
