Precision: The Original Magruder Mystery by D.C. Scott is an engaging, character-driven mystery that blends thoughtful introspection with small-town intrigue and a touch of dry humor. The novel introduces us to retired Houston detective Jay Magruder, whose attempt at a slower life is disrupted by a cold case that refuses to sit quietly in the “solved” pile.

From the very beginning, the book sets a unique tone — part procedural, part personal journey — as Magruder’s sharp instincts lead him to question an assumed murder-suicide. The compelling twist? A single, subtle detail: the knife is in the wrong hand. What follows is a slow burn of investigation, relationships, and richly painted backstories.

The writing shines in its character development. Jay Magruder is a flawed but likable lead — driven, world-weary, and juggling child support for nine kids. The cast is rounded out by memorable characters like Helen, the petite doctor with a commanding presence, and Goldie, the smartest dog you'll ever meet in fiction.

D.C. Scott balances emotional moments, such as dealing with cancer diagnoses and past relationships, with mystery and subtle clues that keep you invested. There are slight pacing issues in some chapters, where detailed backstories slow the momentum, but the charm of the characters and the unexpected emotional depth make up for it.

If you enjoy mysteries that are more character-rich than action-packed, with a strong Southern flavor and thoughtful twists, Precision is well worth the read. It’s clear this is only the beginning of the Magruder Mysteries — and it leaves you curious to follow Jay Magruder’s journey deeper into the series.
