Review of The Secrets of the Majestic Meridian
On April 1, 1933, just before Jennings Filmore goes on vacation to do some fishing, he delivers a shipping crate containing a diplomatic gift of 200 Double Eagle gold coins to Prince Hoboken as he is boarding his yacht, the "Majestic Meridian." During a massive storm, the "Majestic Meridian" sinks to the bottom of the ocean, taking the cargo and everyone on board with it. Four days later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102, making the ownership of all gold coins illegal. In 2023, another ship, the "S.S. Bullett," encounters a massive storm and loses a container of yellow rubber ducks from its cargo. Federal Mint Senior Analyst Emma Morgan finds a misfiled diplomatic receipt for the 1933 Double Eagle gold coins given to Prince Hoboken and contacts her boyfriend, Jack Harvey. They then contact Jack's old college friend, Chet, who owns a salvage boat, to hunt for the sunken ship and the 200 rare coins. Why didn't the government look for these coins when they took them out of circulation and confiscated them in 1933? Will Jack and Emma find the golden coins, or will they find rubber ducks? Whatever they find, can they legally claim it as their own?
The Secrets of the Majestic Meridian by Steven P. Gower is an action-packed and suspenseful crime thriller with a lot of mystery throughout the storyline. The author's descriptive writing style allowed me to visualize the massive storms, the neglected abandoned warehouse, and the various diners with their unique decors, to name a few. The character development made me curious about each character's next moves. The suspense continued as additional characters (e.g., underworld coin dealers, thieves, police officers, Secret Service agents, etc.) entered the storyline. Rick and Tick kept me laughing because no matter what they did, it would turn into a disaster for them and their boss. My favorite aspect of this book was the life lessons the treasure hunters learned.
The only major flaw in this book is the lack of professional editing. There are missing apostrophes, spelling errors, and inconsistencies with punctuation, capitalization, and italicization, to name a few error types that a professional editor would have found.
Although the book contains many errors, they did not affect my reading enjoyment. I encountered no other negative aspects that would have made it necessary to deduct any more stars from my rating, as the plot flowed smoothly, and the author's writing skills kept the mystery and suspense flowing throughout the storyline. All of this justifies my rating of 4 out of 5 stars, deducting one star for the errors.
If you enjoy reading about shipwrecks and hidden treasures, you will not be disappointed by this book, as it is full of adventure, mystery, and suspense. I will caution potential readers that the non-borderline profanity content makes it inappropriate for younger or sensitive readers.
