Demon Freaks is a funny, thrilling and fast paced book written by J.R.R.R Hardison. This is a Young Adult novel and the author has made a great job addressing it to its specific market. However, I have enjoyed very much the lecture of this book despite not being in the target category, so it’s a book I can recommend to all ages. That is, if you enjoy humor and well written stories.

Demon Freaks is the story of two twin brothers, Bing (after Bing Crosby) and Ron (after none other than Ronald McDonald) who stumble in the middle of some strange events that will change their perception about the entire universe. The action of the book takes place in just one night – the night before the SATs. Bing and Ron meet with their friends, Meat and Kaitlyn to …well, study, they’ll say. During a furious storm they are attacked by their history teacher with a very special dagger and from that moment forward the things get increasingly weirder and more dangerous. In an attempt to save their friends life, Bing and Ron discover a secret organization who plans to summon a demon by sacrifice. After escaping many dangers, including the bizarre teethheads, the brothers find help from a well-known corporation. They also find out that their seemingly uninteresting family is actually pretty badass.

The prose is simple and efficient and I managed to get a very clear idea of the surroundings and the characters. The author uses a lot of humor, not just in the lines, but mostly through comical situations and antithesis. Most characters are well developed and you get the feeling you know them quite well, so you can root for them. Although Bing and Ron are twins, they have managed to become very different individuals. Being the main characters, the author does a very good job of allowing the reader to connect with them by offering insight into their though process.

One of the things I disliked and that disappointed me a little bit was that the ending was a bit far-fetched. In my opinion, the author should have used more foreshadowing so this could be a happy ending beyond questioning. Another thing I am unsure of is if it’s ok, legally speaking, to use such a major corporation in your works. But in both cases, I was really satisfied with the outcome so better not complain.

I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, because despite some minor flaws, it has been an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone interested in humorous stories with a paranormal twist.
