Filled with paranormal activities and comedy, Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. Jim Hardison is a novel that is a must read and totally entertaining.
Bing Slaughter and Ron Slaughter are twins, but have distinct personalities. Bing is serious while Ron is reckless in life. But one thing is common in them. They both try not to look same by wearing the same clothes because according to them those twins are “Mutant cutesy geeks”, the fact they hate with a passion.
Their history teacher has allotted them time to prepare for the SAT which will be held the following day. He is the one who makes every student cringe and confused by his appearance and conversations. Disliked by the twins, he has already earned a song written for him, which isn’t appreciative, landing the boys in the teacher’s red list.
When they hear about the test, Bing decides to direct his full attention for its preparation and not get distracted by the music band that they were a part of. But Ron and their friend ‘Meat’ aka Prathamesh Kimitri have other thoughts. They make plans to stay at a cabin that Meat’s parents own and study there while practicing on a few songs.
But will they follow the plan they have made? What about their SAT preparation? Will they pass their SAT?
The most attractive part of this novel is the writing style and the elaborating way in which the story is written. The author has a pleasant way to express the events and scenes clearly. The plot is fantastic and unique. The characters show similarities with people that we come across in our day-to-day lives which I found attractive. The book was balanced between mystery, comedy and paranormal activities that was impressive.
When I chose this novel, I was a bit hesitant to read it because this was my first time reading any novel of this genre. But after reading the first chapter I continued reading because the story line escalated so well that I forgot how much time I was spending to complete this novel. I wanted to know how it will end. I appreciate the author for writing such an intriguing and fun-filled book.
The ending left a bittersweet feeling in me that I didn’t like, but it wasn’t a reason for me to decrease the stars. It had no grammatical or spelling errors which were a plus point for the novel. Apart from the ending, everything was likable about this book.
I would give this novel 4 out of 4 stars. Even though I disliked the ending, it wasn’t enough of a reason to cut the rating for it. I would definitely recommend this novel for readers of all ages because it doesn’t have any disturbing scene and will be liked by everyone, especially those who love books related to paranormal stuffs along with humor.
