Demon Freaks
J.R.R.R. (JIM) HARDISON
Demon Freaks is a humorous novel for young adults. Bing and Ron Slaughter are twin brothers, just normal everyday teenagers that end up experiencing a night of supernatural insanity. An evening of study gets slacked off into yet another night of band practice and then suddenly...things get weird. Bing and Ron find their world turned upside down as murderous history teachers, glowy-eyed followers of darkness, and golfer demon summoners come out of the woodwork.
Bing and Ron spend a night of terror and realization as they storm the dark lair of the Golf Association and attempt to rescue their bandmates from ritual sacrifice. They must find a way to save their friends while battling the forces of darkness and overcoming their own youth and inexperience. But can they do all this and still manage to pass their SAT tests in the morning?
Hardison is a great writer. He has a talent for creating a full world and characters in very little space. His writing has good flow and his action scenes are excellently done. The humor is constant, shining out in both dialogue and action. His characters are simply done with just enough detail to make them understandable and the personalities fleshed out through the dialogue.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. There were many parts that left me giggling. I think Hardison has done a fantastic job of creating a fun horror story suitable for the young adult genre. It is not overly gruesome, which I feel is always a plus even in a book like this meant for older teenagers. Hardison also goes a little deeper, addressing basic Good vs Evil and the meaning of life in a very direct and understandable way. There is a simple moral message throughout the book and I applaud the author for his insight and his ability to convey the ideas without being preachy in any way. The character Meat's self-realization late in the book is one of the best written teenage thought scenes I have read. I was not expecting pearls of wisdom in a humor/horror book for teens, but surprises by skilled writers are always pleasant.
I give Demon Freaks a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book is humorous, fast-paced, and downright fun. The writing is well done, flows wonderfully, and is blissfully free of editing errors. I would recommend it to any mature young adult reader and adult readers as well. Any fan of comedy or fantasy should find this book quite enjoyable.
