Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. Hardison tells of a creepy and dangerous adventure experienced by twin teenage boys and their friends. Bing and Ron Slaughter are just your average teenagers; in a band with their best friends, studying for tests, getting in trouble with teachers. The night before the friends are supposed to be taking their SATs, one of the most important tests in a teens life, they find their night interrupted by supernatural forces. And is it just a coincidence that one of their most hated teachers is involved?

As a fan of the supernatural and mysteries, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each chapter flowed easily into the next, and I found it hard to put down as I anticipated what was going to happen. This is not one of those stories where it’s easy to tell what will happen in the end. New conflicts and surprises surround every corner, and it doesn’t come off as too distracting or a disconnected mess.

I found this book to be pretty easy to read, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. It read as a young adult book to me, and I while I do enjoy a good YA fiction, some people may not find them complex enough to capture their attention. I was surprised that I didn’t get tangled up or lost in the multitude of changing dialogue, which really speaks to the author giving the characters’ words a natural and realistic flow.

I found the lack of an underlying love story a nice omission, as it made the action all the more enjoyable. I personally do not enjoy too much of that in my mystery adventures. While there was no particular love interests or pairs, there was a believable comradery between the teenage characters. The story was actually something relatively new that hasn’t been overdone in other books or television series. There was a nice amount of humor in it, and I loved the role that McDonald’s played in the story. So unexpected!

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. If you are a fan of mysteries with a supernatural edge, this book is for you. It covers a scary theme without crossing over into a horror genre. I found it very entertaining, and I found myself anxious to pick it up every night. The use of grammar and dialogue was good, and the story itself was a delight to read. Over all it was enjoyable.
