Are you looking for your next great thriller? Are you looking for a fast paced story full of twists and secrets? Then look no farther. Pancake Money by Finn Bell is your next great read.
Pancake Money is a murder mystery that will have you reeling from the first page until the last. The story takes place in Dunedin, New Zealand and spans over the course of one week. There are two main characters, Bobby Ress and Pollo Latu. Pollo is an experienced cop that has a tough exterior persona but is actually all heart. Bobby is a rookie that is still learning the ways of police work. As the story progresses you will follow Bobby and Pollo in their race against crime as they try to solve the murder of a Catholic priest before the killer strikes again. Travel along with them as they discover secrets and finally getting to the truth with an uneasy alliance that was never expected.
Finn Bell done a great job with bringing the characters to life for his readers. Pollo was my favorite character in this story. I loved the no-nonsense, sarcastic comments that Pollo made from time to time. I am not a cop, so I can only imagine what cops go through on a day-to-day basis. Pollo’s wry sense of humor was a defense mechanism when the job was getting to be too much. Occasionally his humor didn’t work and he would get falling down drunk. I’m not a big fan of drinking, but that didn’t take away any fondness that I had for Pollo. Bobby was more of a philosophical sort. There wasn’t as much humor with Bobby as there was with Pollo, but you put the two of them together, and they complimented each other well during the investigation.
Finn Bell is very descriptive with his murder scenes. It was easy imaging you were right there with Bobby and Pollo studying the dead bodies for evidence. I enjoyed the Catholic history behind the staged murder scenes as well.
I always try to figure out who the killer is before it comes out in the story. Just when I thought I had it all figured out in this story, the author would reveal another secret and take another twist. I didn’t know who the killer was until the author was ready for me to know. For that reason I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book for any adult that loves a good murder mystery with descriptive murder scenes.
