Pancake Money by Finn Bell- 4 out of 4 stars
Pancake Money by Finn Bell is a fantastic crime read that will captivate you from the first page. Just like any great mystery, crime novel, it leaves it's readers with just enough details to make you wonder who did it from beginning to end.
The thrilling novel is about two police officers who are put on a case to find the killer behind three gruesome murders, which eventually turns out to be more. Bobby Ress and Pollo Latu are the two detectives on the case initially after the first murder. Bobby Ress is the younger of the two with Pollo Latu being older and having more experience in his work. On top of what is happening in their community, Bobby Ress is also struggling to balance his work and home life. His wife wants him to not do street work anymore. She thinks it's too dangerous, but Bobby Ress just can't seem to give it up, especially not in the middle of this case.
With no leads or physical evidence left behind, all they have is their intuitions and experience trying to figure out who and why. Within a span of days, two other priests are murdered with nothing left behind at any of the scenes. Ress and Latu still have nothing to go on. While doing their investigation, they learn about a community that has been hidden for years. It's made up of sexual trauma victims and priests helping the victims recover. The three priests that were murdered happened to work there. They need to protect the fourth from meeting the same fate as the others. Through this place and the community around them, they will learn all the pieces of the puzzle to find the killer.
I give the novel, Pancake Money, 4 out of 4 stars. There is not one thing I did not like about the book. I didn't find any spelling or grammar mistakes. The book was very detailed and graphic which made it easy to picture and kept me wanting to read on. My favorite thing about this book, was actually finding out what pancake money was and how pancakes came into play in the novel. Although it is a minor topic to like about the book, I think it was a perfect title that was integrated in small parts throughout.
One other topic that really made me enjoy this book even more, was the lecture on pain near the beginning. It was interesting to gain perspective on why pain can make any living organism do anything. I never really thought of pain as the main motivator in life, but as the lecture went on, it was so obvious. I always appreciate learning new things from novels.
I can recommend this novel who likes reading crime mysteries. This would be a great book for anyone who would like to give the genre a try. As I said before, it captivates from the very beginning. I would not recommend this book to younger readers, only because the murder scenes are gruesome.
