Pancake Money by Finn Bell, is a thriller/mystery about a young police detective, Bobby Ress. Bobby and his partner Pollo Latu are on the hunt for a serial killer who is mercilessly killing off priests in the most gruesome way imaginable. Bobby and Pollo must catch this killer before any more dead bodies turn up. But with a serious lack of evidence and no apparent motives, this is going to be a tough one for them to crack.
In this book we follow the life of Bobby Ress, he's a young police detective, just 28 years old with a wife and an 11-year-old daughter who is too afraid of the outside world that she won’t leave the house. Bobby is about to face the biggest case of his career so far. He's now chasing a serial killer. Catching a serial killer is hard enough, but when you add in the fact he leaves no evidence behind and Bobby can’t see any motive behind these killings, it becomes a whole lot harder. We watch as Bobby and his partner Pollo unravel this case on hunches, gut instincts and good old fashioned police work.
This book will leave you with a serious case of whiplash. You follow the story so far and just as you think you have cracked it BAM! The author hits you with a series of twists and turns and you are now in a completely new direction. By the time you finally catch up and think that you are back on track, he hits you with more twists and you're right back to where you started. This is a complex, well written and very well researched book, the story is set in New Zealand which is where the author is from. He incorporates real parts of New Zealand into his book. For example; the Màori and the manga kahu, which are tribes that live out in the bush of New Zealand and they live off the land. He has incorporated all the history of these tribes into this story. He's gone out and spoken to people from these tribes and collected actual facts instead of tid bits of information just from the internet.
What I liked most about this book was the way it keeps you guessing. Right from the first chapter I thought I had it figured out, but by the end I was completely shocked and never saw it coming. The author takes you step by step, he’s set it out hourly/daily so you completely follow the investigation, rather than it skipping week by week or a few months ahead. This book is interesting and insightful, from the way the author gives an insight in to the mind of a killer, this is done through one of the characters that is set out as a forensic psychologist. Again this point brings me back to how well this book is researched, I think it is astounding the amount of research that has gone into this, that is what makes this a great book.
There was not a single thing that I didn’t like about this book. It's been professionally edited and proofread, there were two spelling mistakes that I found in this whole thing, they must have just slipped through the net. They were so minor, that I doubt you would even notice unless you were looking for them.
So for the above reasons I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to everybody over the age if 16, just because of the detailed murders. Anybody that is looking for that edge of the seat, gripping to read kind of book, this is definitely for you!
