Final Notice by Van Fleisher is a fast-paced, fictional thriller set in America in the near future. It recounts the creation of a new smart watch which monitors the health of the wearer so accurately that it can predict their time of death. Final Notice tells the stories of individuals who wear the device and what they decide to do when they receive a final notice giving the time of their demise. The book covers politics, corporate responsibility and medical drama, interspersed with a good chunk of violence, friendship and love.

I became engrossed in the book from the beginning and empathised with most of the main characters. I even warmed to the one who had created the watch even though I felt he had involved himself in a rather sinister project. The storyline was fresh and it included a lot of pertinent issues of the day. The author gave discourse on gun ownership, immigration, health and problems encountered by the elderly in modern society. It was refreshing to read about the older generation, how they viewed their lives and the prejudice they encounter.

The dialogue was well written. The author differentiated between the formal conversation. For example, between law enforcement officers and the medical profession; and that of two couples socialising over a meal. I liked the chapter headings. For example, Chapter 27 - Bad News, News & a Walk in the Dark. It gave the reader an interesting clue regarding what to expect.

The watch itself caused a moral maze of problems and I enjoyed reading about the actions of those who had received notice of their imminent death. I did feel at times as if the author was preaching politics to the reader and this rather spoiled it a little for me even though I agreed with much of what he said.

To my surprise, I had no idea how this book was going to end. This is something that is increasingly difficult with so many books on the market these days. I was convinced on many occasions while reading Final Notice that I knew what was coming up and how the characters would react. I was often quite wrong and I was extremely pleased about this!

This was a great book with an innovative storyline. I enjoyed it a lot and would recommend it. I give Final Notice 4 out of 4 stars. I think those who enjoy action-packed thrillers, medical, political and social drama will like this book.
