The book, "Pancake Money" written by Finn Bell is a crime thriller set in New Zealand. Bobby Ress is a twenty eight year old cop who struggles to balance street work with being a good husband to his designer wife and a good father to his agoraphobic eleven year old daughter, Eva.
His wife wants him to stop doing street jobs and find a regular desk job, but he is still held at his job where he takes regular philosophical classes with Ann, and the occasional old fashioned talk from Pollo.
Three old priests die gruesome deaths and during the course of investigations, he loses his mentor and friend, Pollo. The priests were known to be kind people, but what motivated the killers. Was it money, sex or power? The fire in Ann's house was supposed to be an accident, but why did she place a distress call across to Bobby before she died?
Pain changes people. It's hard to convinice them to do the right thing, but give them enough pain and they will obey you. However, too much pain has it's consequences. Depression, mental illnesses and consequently, isolation from others. Isolation like that of the kids who don't fit in, or the family member who is a drag, or the homeless person who eats from the trash. Or Liam.
Ian Tull abused his children and killed eleven members of his family, including himself. Little Liam was four then, but he survived. Four priests took care of him, showed him love and nurtured him.Twenty years later, a maniac who killed his loved ones arose.
Jones put his family and friends at risk in his quest for revenge. That was the reason Alkaline Ben said he had to die. Bobby gathered the facts but he only had answers when Pollo died. Then Alkaline Ben was dangerous, powerful and philosophical. Taste equals wisdom, but then he didn't kill Bobby.
"Pancake Money" by Finn Bell was published in 2017 with ISBN: 978-0-473-36808-1. It doesn't have a specific chapter length but it spans over two hundred pages. I would give it a four out of four for unique style and professional editing, but it might not be the best book for people who do not like reading violent scenes. It's philosophy is that pain changes people and I find that very striking. My favorite character was Alkaline Ben. His attitude and philosophy kept me engrossed, reading up till the last page.
"Pancake Money " is a book I would recommend for readers who want something interesting and original. It's fast paced, filled with suspense and even philosophical. The editing was good, the language simple and the story beautiful. I loved the book and in the future, I would love to read more of Finn Bell's books.
