The Mystery of Flight 2222 by Thomas Neviaser begins with Frank who is sent to Argentina as a consultant for his business, leaving his pregnant wife at home. Helen is a divorcee who decides to attend her ex-mother-in-law’s funeral, also in Argentina. As passengers board their flight from Miami to Buenos Aires, Frank and Helen end up seated next to each other and decide to pass the time by guessing the names, ages, and occupations of other passengers. After crashing at sea, Frank and Helen manage to launch a raft and bring others out of the plane before it sinks. Amazingly, the seven passengers who had been the subjects of their game manage to escape the sinking plane. This is a very odd coincidence.

What follows are hardships unlike anything any of them had ever experienced. On a raft in the middle of nowhere, they did what was necessary to survive, rationing what little food they had, saving rain water, hoping sharks would not get them, and praying for salvation. Finally rescued, only to find it is by pirates with nefarious intentions, the story escalates from there.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, not something I do lightly. It is well written, with twists and turns you don’t see coming. Mr. Neviaser has created a story of seemingly everyday people and how they manage in this most difficult and horrifying situation. I did notice that on my computer a couple of times, the size of the font changed, but since I don’t know if it was my computer or his formatting, I am not taking that into consideration. There was not much that I didn’t like about this book.

The story of their days on the raft seems to go on and on, but the storyline gets really interesting and fast-moving when the pirates show up. The end is shocking and worthy of a Twilight Zone episode. Mr. Neviaser has a message in his story, but one you don’t see coming. The Epilogue is definitely a large part of the story, so be sure to read it.

The Mystery of Flight 2222 starts slow, finally speeds up, and ends with a resounding ‘Holy Toledo!’ I would recommend this book to those over 16 because there are some scenes of what these dying passengers are forced to do when a couple of passengers die on the raft. Other than that, this is a story of angst, terror, cooperation, and back to terror that will appeal to mystery and suspense readers everywhere.

This sounds horrific - in a good way! I love survival stories from "Robinson Crusoe" onwards, but it sounds like this may be one to save up for Halloween rather than high summer.

It took me about 2 days to read half of it, but when the pirates appeared, I read the rest of the book in a few hours! That's how surprising it is.

If you are old enough to have watched Twilight Zone, you will really enjoy this book.

You write a compelling review. Especially by referencing The Twilight Zone, a show I still like to see on DVDs. I might have to check this one out.
