Pain, the opposite of comfort, is a powerful stimulus to influence the “behavior” of a person and every living creature on earth. The moment there is pain, a person may become open-minded about certain possibilities. An individual has no choice but to go for change, good or bad, the moment he suffers pain especially if it is too much to bear. In-depth realization may follow thereafter. Good thing, people have the capacity to realize that the source of pain may either come from one of these three or a combination of them: MONEY, SEX, and POWER. The three common reasons why people mostly do bad things over and over again. Finn Bell, establishes this striking perspective in his thriller Pancake Money.
Winner of the Indie Reader Award for Best Fiction 2018, Bell, has a wonderful insight to tell about the complex behavior of the individuals. His stunning success may be based on the fact that he knows well how to capture readers’ interest with his ingenious literary masterpiece. There is so much going on in this thriller that sustains readers’ interest in an extra-ordinary way. That what makes this book impossible to put down.
The storyline begins with the establishment of the character of Bobby Ress, a cop with strong discernment for human behavior. His character, as the story progresses, forms into someone who has a sure place in this world. Bobby as a principled man believes in making a difference. On the other hand, his understanding and principles are put to the test the moment he learns more about pain.
The professor’s lecture that Bobby attended from the beginning of the story stages a good background of the plot. This excellent foundation sustains readers’ interest all throughout the reading process to uncover the bottom line.
There are many things to like most about this book. It communicates the essential thoughts of life as it highlights the essence of pain. Furthermore, it speaks this idea: On top of the other pains facing mankind, sometimes the most challenging point in one’s life is the acceptance of a painful truth.
The wonderful psychological insights in this novel are linked effectively to the plot. This makes the thriller communicates more about motivation and human behavior as Bobby and his co-detective Pollo try to uncover the truth far beyond the evidence behind serial killings.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author knows exactly the brilliant way to begin and end a thriller to make it impossible to put down. It was a very good read.
